Star Counts from Hst: Implications for Dark Matter

چکیده

Star counts made with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) probe four populations that are important for dark matter: disk, halo, bulge, and intergalactic. The disk mass function falls for masses M < 0.6 M⊙ in sharp contrast to the rising Salpeter function usually assumed. The amount of “observed” disk material is therefore lower than commonly believed which implies the need for disk dark matter. Halo stars contribute no more than a few percent of the dark matter. Disk and halo together contribute no more than 10% of the observed microlensing optical depth toward the Large Magellanic Cloud. The bulge luminosity function is similar to that of the disk down to MV ∼ 10. If this similarity continues to the bottom of the main sequence, the bulge microlensing events can only be explained by a large population of brown dwarfs. Intergalactic stars in the Local Group have a density lower than the local halo density by at least 10.

Faint star counts with HST

We describe a program of star counts in the range 19 ∼< I ∼< 26 made with the WFPC cameras aboard the Hubble Space Telescope. Red (V − I > 1.0) stars at these magnitudes are primarily disk and spheroid M dwarfs. The stars are found both on dedicated images as part of the parallel program and by using appropriate archive data. We measure the faint end of the luminosity functions of the disk and ...

Star Counts and the Warped and Flaring Milky Way Disk

This paper reports the star count predictions of warped and flaring models of the outer Milky Way disk. These have been suggested as possible locations of the lenses responsible for the microlensing events towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Three such models are investigated in detail and the theoretical predictions are confronted with Hubble Space Telescope (HST) star count data in 7 lo...

Illuminating the darkness More evidence from faint - star proper - motions for a cool and warm component to the local dark matter in the Galaxy ⋆ René A . Méndez

We present new evidence, based on faint HST proper-motions, for a bi-modal kinematic population of old white dwarfs, representative of the Thick-Disk and Halo of our Galaxy. This evidence supports the idea of a massive Halo comprised of faint and old white dwarfs, along with an extant population of Thick-Disk white dwarfs. We show how most of the required dark matter in the solar vicinity can b...

Faint galaxy counts as a function of morphological type in a hierarchical merger model

The unprecedented resolution of the refurbished Wide Field and Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) has led to major advances in our understanding of galaxy formation. The high image quality in the Medium Deep Survey and Hubble Deep Field has made it possible, for the first time, to classify faint distant galaxies according to morphological type. These observations hav...

Stellar and Total Mass in Early-type Lensing Galaxies

For 18 well-observed gravitationally lensed QSOs, we compare new non-parametric mass profiles for the lensing galaxies with stellar-population models derived from published HST photometry. The large volume of parameter space searched – with respect to the possible star formation histories – allows us to infer robust estimates and uncertainties for the stellar masses. The most interesting result...
